Westminster Abbey
Edward the Confessor built the abbey church at Westminster, outside London. It was dedicated in 1065 and since then every English monarch but two has been crowned there. Harold Godwinsson was crowned Harold II on 5 January 1066 and William the Bastard or the Conqueror was crowned there on Christmas Day of the same year. The building now on the site was begun in 1245 by Henry III and is in the French style. Westminster Abbey and Waltham Abbey were unusual in that they were not modified or rebuilt immediately after the conquest of 1066.
