Both the English king Edward the Confessor and the Norman William the Conqueror had trouble with the Welsh on the western border. The English under Harold Godwinsson fought against King Gruffydd ap Llywelyn whom they defeated in 1063. William was beset with an alliance between Edric the Wild, a Herefordshire land-owner, and the Welsh princes Bleddyn and Riwallon in 1067 and again in 1069; a challenge he overcame with ease.
