Wallingford
A town on the River Thames north of the Goring Gap through the Chiltern Hills, Wallingford was the place at which William the Conqueror crossed the Thames in his great encircling march round London after defeating Harold Godwinsson in the battle on Senlac Hill. It was probably here that Stigand, the doubtful archbishop of Canterbury, submitted to William. Other English leaders presented themselves to do homage to him at Little Berkhamstead.
