Tower of London
The greater part of the Tower of London is post- Norman, but at its centre is one of the most beautiful and impressive castles from the time of William the Conqueror. The Roman walls of London stood here and can still be seen on the site. In the corner of the old Roman city, with a ditch and palisade to separate it from the town, Bishop Gundulph of Rochester put in hand the building of this superb donjon or tower keep, the White Tower. It was completed in about 1100 after being twenty-two years in the building. The Tower of London is a fascinating and popular place to visit (tel: 020 7600 3699).
