Southwark

After his victory at Senlac Hill on 14 October 1066 and his wait at Hastings for an English surrender which failed to materialize, William the Conqueror began a long march. He moved first to the east, Dover and Canterbury, and then in a wide sweep to the west, by Guildford and Wallingford. A probing detachment of cavalry was sent north towards London during this manoeuvre but Londoners crossed the bridge to meet it and after a brief skirmish it withdrew, having set fire to the houses of Southwark, south of the Thames.
