Old Romney
In 1066 Old Romney was a port. Today it is on the A259 west of New Romney and a good four miles from the sea. Two of William the Bastard's ships strayed off course when the fleet was sailing to England, ended up in Old Romney and the isolated crews and troops were killed by the men of the town. After Harold Godwinsson had been killed at Senlac Hill, William waited at Hastings for the English to offer their formal surrender. No one came, so the Normans set off east for Dover, detaching a raiding party as they went to visit revenge on Old Romney.
