Kite Shield
The circular shield was replaced with the kite shield at the end of the 10th century. It was asymmetrical, having about the same area above the grip but being drawn out into a point below it. Opinions on its virtues vary. It is said that, for cavalry, it had the advantage of covering the rider's leg, but illustrations very often show it carried with the long extension to the rear, a horizontal kite. It may be that the static, defensive use of a shield wall was more effective with a long shield.
