Keep
The first castles built in England were constructed by Normans in the time of Edward the Confessor. There was at least one at Hereford. After the conquest numerous motte and bailey castles were built to dominate the populace of the conquered land. More substantial stone keeps or donjons were also built, such as the White Tower which now stands at the centre of the Tower of London.
