Hereford
Before the Norman Conquest there were few castles in England and those that had been built were the work of Norman friends of Edward the Confessor. Among these four sites was Hereford where at least one castle has been constructed by Edward's nephew, Ralph. The town itself had been fortified as a burgh by Harold Godwinsson during his campaign against Gruffydd in 1055, when the Welshman had sacked the place. Hereford was again the centre of turmoil in 1067 and 1069 when Edric the Wild rebelled against William the Conqueror.
