Gonfanon
The Norman knight fought in a conrois, a group of perhaps twenty or more men commmanded by his lord. To identify himself their leader would have a banner, a gonfanon, fitted to his lance. The discipline of the group made it possible to use sophisticated tactics such as feigned flight.
