Fighting Man Banner
Leaders and warriors used banners to identify themselves both to their followers and to their adversaries. At the Battle of Hastings the English had no national flag to show, but Harold Godwinsson flew both his standard as Earl of Wessex, the Dragon Banner, and his personal standard, the Fighting Man.
