Exchequer

An innovation of Norman government under William I was the establishment of proper control of state finance. The department concerned made payments at a table covered with a chequered cloth, like a chess board, a device that was also used, like an abacus, to make calculations. The Old French word for a chess board, eschequier, thus became the name of the department itself.
