Durham
In 1069 a rising at Durham and York obliged William the Conqueror to hurry north to suppress it and also to campaign against the Danes who took the opportunity to launch raids on eastern England from Dover to York. A castle was built at Durham the following year. In 1093 the Anglo-Norman Romanesque cathedral was begun. It was the first large building in north-western Europe to have a ceiling entirely of ribbed vaulting. The decorative geometrical carving of the stonework is astounding.
