Clifford's Tower
In 1068 Edwin of Mercia and Morcar of Northumbria allied themselves with Bleddyn of Wales and threatened rebellion against William I. The king marched north, pausing to begin the building of the castle at Warwick, at which point the discontented earls wisely offered their submission. York surrendered as the castle at Nottingham was in the building. A great motte was raised in York and was probably surmounted by a wooden palisade and tower. In the 13th century a stone tower was built there and is know as Clifford's Tower. It is now in the care of English Heritage and is open to visitors daily except for Christmas and New Year's Day.
