Chester

William I built a castle at Chester as part of his final campaign in the north of England. A man called Gherbaud was left behind as Earl of Chester, but he soon returned to his home in Flanders and Hugh d'Avranches, called Hugh-le-Loup, became the Earl. He lived up to his nickname of Wolf in his campaigns against the Welsh and was the builder of Rhuddlan Castle.
