Bede
St Bede (c.673-735 A.D.) was an English historian, known as the Venerable Bede, whose Ecclesiastical History of the English People was completed in about 731 AD.This work, written in Latin, is the earliest coherent history of the Anglo-Saxons and it was translated into English at the order of King Alfred. St Bede went to live in a monastery at Jarrow, on the south bank of the River Tyne, in 682, about the time when the chapel, part of which is still to be seen there, was built and here he wrote not only his history but also scientific works and poetry. Only one poem, his Death Song, survives. His feast day is 27 May.
