Bayeux

Governed by a Count Béranger in the 10th century and it was to his daughter, Popa, that the Viking Rollo was married.Their son was born in 905 A.D. and the Norman dynasty had begun. In 1066 Odo, Bishop of Bayeux accompanied his half-brother, William the Conqueror in the invasion of England and was rewarded by being created Earl of Kent. He commissioned the massive embroidery, the Bayeux Tapestry to commemorate the Norman victory over Harold II and displayed it in the Cathedral of Our Lady, the new church he consecrated in 1077. Almost miraculously the tapestry has survived to the present day and it may be seen in a special gallery in the Bishop's Palace in Bayeux.
